Pierre Bergé and Yves Saint Laurent acquired their first house in the medina. It was named Dar el-Hanch, Arabic for the “Snake’s House.” The couturier drew a large snake on the wall of their dining room. This “Marrakech’s best-kept secret” was the creative retreat where Yves Saint Laurent found his inspiration for several of his collections. The designer was deeply influenced by the Red City, its colors, patterns and culture.The garden designer Madison Cox opened a new, environmentally-friendly chapter at the Jardin Majorelle by adding numerous succulent plant varieties native to Morocco, and by replacing ground cover with rose-coloured gravel that echoes the dominant colour of Marrakech.
Located very near the Jardin Majorelle – acquired by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé in 1980 – the musée YVES SAINT LAURENT marrakech occupies a new 4,000 m² building. It includes a 400m² permanent exhibition space devoted to the work of Yves Saint Laurent and designed by Christophe Martin. Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé were real lovers of Morocco. They have made Marrakech, the ocher city, their oasis of serenity, and the Villa Dar Es Saada – which stands for house of happiness in Arabic- their haven. In the bustling heart of Marrakech lies a tranquil anomaly: Jardins Marjorelle, home to the sprawling Modernist villa that once belonged to French fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé. Now the estate, designed by architect Paul Sinoir in the 1930s for the French painter Jacques Marjorelle, is for sale.
A collection of CDs, personal photographs of YSL and the friends with whom he shared his life, open books, and YSL sketches make this elegantly designed, superiorly crafted house still feel very much like an adored, warm, and inviting home.
