The first Rolex Explorer II (reference 1655) was worn by speleologists, volcanologists, and polar and jungle explorers around the globe. Powered by the 26-jewel Caliber 1575 movement, the watch features a number of characteristics specifically for keeping track of day and night hours in environments without sunlight. The Rolex Explorer is in many ways the quintessential dressy tool watch from Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual collection — less flashy than the GMT-Master, less bulky than the Submariner, while still rooted, like those two models, in a history of adventure and discovery. The Explorer is a humble watch for a Rolex professional model launched 69 years ago. And yet it was the Rolex worn by Ian Fleming, and the one he was most likely thinking of when he decided which watch James Bond would wear. Today, the Explorer is something of an outlier within the modern Rolex sport watch lineup.
Enter the Rolex Explorer 14270, a watch that at one time was referred to as having "no horological interest whatsoever" by watch writer Walt Odets and the first Rolex ever purchased by Ben Clymer. The 14270 was released at the Basel Fair in 1989 and put Rolex at the cross-section of sport and luxury. All of the Rolex Explorer II model references and in history with photos and detailed explanations of the differences.
Rolex produced the Explorer II ref. 1655 until the mid-eighties. The brand introduced its successor, the Explorer II ref. 16550 in 1985. That watch solved many impracticalities and looks like the Explorer II as we know it today. Entry Point: The supermini of the watch world, the Rolex Explorer is a rugged, thoroughly capable watch with very adaptable styling. It is also a relatively accessible entrance into the temple of Rolex. Sizes: Earlier models are sized smaller (36mm) as it was customary in the past for sport watches to be made smaller to protect the crystal .Find low prices for 128 Rolex ref. 1016 watches on Chrono24. Compare deals and buy a ref. 1016 watch. Rolex’s dedicated adventure watch, the Explorer, traces its origins back to mountain climbing in 1953. In 1971, however, another watch joined the collection with the name Explorer II and a quite different set of features, looks, size and purpose.
